Château de Bernicourt

Château de Bernicourt stands on a large estate with outbuildings, gates, a farm structure with multiple entrances, and gardens featuring a water feature. The property includes several structures that together show what a working estate looked like in past centuries.

The castle was built in 1743 on the site where a 14th-century manor had once stood. From 1930 to 1985 it served as housing for workers employed at nearby coal mines in the region.

The ground floor and basement house an eco-museum that recreates early 20th-century life for visitors. Reconstructed classrooms and artisan workshops show how people worked and lived during that period.

The site is easy to explore on foot since all main buildings are spread across manageable grounds. Visitors should allow time to see the museum inside and to walk through the gardens and around the grounds.

The basement holds a collection of tools and equipment showing how traditional craftspeople such as wheelwrights, shoemakers, and blacksmiths worked. These workshops remain preserved and give visitors a direct view of how hands-on trades were actually practiced.
