Château de la Crête

Château de la Crête is a castle in Audes built between 1895 and 1905, located about 1.5 kilometers west of the village. The building features a central courtyard surrounded by wings with towers and a dovecote decorated with neo-Gothic pointed-arch windows.

An original fortress from the 14th century stood at this location and remained inhabited until the French Revolution, after which it fell into decline. The current building was later constructed anew on the ruins and has shaped the landscape since.

The castle represents the architectural evolution from medieval fortification to Renaissance style, showcasing the transformation of French noble residences over centuries.

The castle is situated in a rural setting west of the village, with views over the Forest stream valley. Access is best reached via local roads that wind through the surrounding countryside.

The building was constructed using local ochre and red sandstone, giving it a distinctive coloring that sets it apart from other structures in the area. This material choice reflects the use of resources readily available in the Allier region.
