Château de la Faye, Medieval castle in Deviat, France
Château de la Faye is a castle in Auriac-du-Périgord built on a circular platform with multiple connected structures. The main building faces southwest while a wing extends toward the northwest.
The castle originated in the Middle Ages as a fortified stronghold for the Montendre family. The Saint-Simon family later redesigned it in the 18th century, shifting its purpose from military to residential.
The name comes from the Faye family who held the land for generations. The site reveals how a defensive structure gradually transformed into a comfortable residence.
The elevated location provides good visibility of the exterior, with the circular layout easy to understand from any angle. Visitors should note that the original water management system with ponds is still in place and the ground may be damper in some areas.
The castle was originally surrounded by wide moats fed by a clever system of three ponds stacked one above the other. This water engineering demonstrates the sophistication of medieval construction for castle defense.
