Château de la Garde, Medieval castle ruins in Albaret-Sainte-Marie, France.

The castle stands on a granite rock formation above the Truyère river, featuring a shield wall constructed with bossy stones measuring 2.40 meters thick.

Built in the late 14th century, the fortress belonged to the Barony of Apcher, which was considered the most powerful authority in the Gévaudan region.

The departmental archives of Lozère preserve color slides from 1918 to 1950, documenting the architectural evolution of this medieval structure.

Visitors can reach the castle by following the dirt path along the war memorial on the left side of Albaret-Sainte-Marie village square.

The castle's defensive structure lacks a front moat, an unusual characteristic for fortifications of this period in the region.
