Château de la Madeleine

Château de la Madeleine is a fortified castle perched on a hilltop above Chevreuse with defensive walls and square towers overlooking the village. Its central keep retains original features from the 11th century alongside later medieval additions from the 15th century.

The first fortifications began between 1020 and 1090 under Guy I of Chevreuse as wooden structures. During the 12th century these were replaced with solid stone walls that define the castle today.

The rooms here reveal how medieval people lived and worked in this region across different periods. Visitors can observe how construction techniques evolved through time.

The castle opens several days each week with extended hours during warmer months. Free access is provided to the courtyard, defensive walls, and guard tower.

Inside the castle sits a well-preserved medieval well from the 15th century. The building also serves as headquarters for the Regional Natural Park of Haute Vallée de Chevreuse.
