Coliséum, Sports complex and Olympic swimming pool in Amiens, France.
Coliséum is a multi-sport complex near the centre of Amiens, opened on 5 January 1996 on the site of the former Pierre-de-Coubertin sports palace. It was designed by architect Pierre Parat, who also designed the Paris-Bercy arena. The building holds two ice rinks, an Olympic swimming pool with several smaller pools and a waterslide, and a 1,500-seat sports hall, plus a dojo and weightlifting rooms.
The complex opened in 1996, replacing the older Pierre de Coubertin sports palace with modern facilities for aquatic and ice sports. This new venue gave the city a contemporary hub for competition and training.
The ice rink hosts the Gothiques d'Amiens, the city's Ligue Magnus hockey club, while the Olympic pool is used by Amiens Métropole Natation. The omnisports hall receives matches of Amiens Handball Club and Les Écureuils d'Amiens. The gymnasium held the French Badminton Championships in February 2017.
The complex is easily accessible and open throughout the week with extended daytime hours for various activities. Visitors should check ahead to see when their desired activity is available, as operating times can vary by sport.
During foundation work in 1993, four Gallo-Roman houses from the 1st or 2nd century AD were unearthed on the site, along with eight tonnes of ceramics, bronze, iron, gold and ivory. The finds joined Amiens' collections and helped show that Samarobriva was one of the largest cities of northern Gaul.
