Cinema Eldorado, Dijon, Historic movie theater in Dijon, France.
Cinema Eldorado is an independent Art et Essai cinema in Dijon. Its cream-coloured Art Deco facade, listed as a monument historique since 1986, has a curved parapet with gold "ELDORADO" and "CINEMA" lettering, two vertical gold ornament panels framing tall windows, and a wide central entrance with dark glass doors.
The construction permit was granted on 17 October 1919 and the cinema opened in July 1920, built on the ruins of a ballroom used by local workers. Its Art Deco facade, with classical borrowings such as projecting drip-moulded tables, was listed as a monument historique by decree of 20 August 1986. The venue has held Art et Essai classification since 1972.
The Eldorado has held the Art et Essai classification since 1972, a French label for cinemas showing a majority of arthouse and non-mainstream films. Each year it hosts the closing ceremony and award presentation of the Dijon International Short Film Festival, a role it has filled since 1995.
The entrance sits on rue Alfred-de-Musset, where the dark glass doors open beneath the gold "ELDORADO" lettering; the yellow band at the base marks the threshold. The three screening rooms are reached from this single street-level hall, so arrive a little before the start. The façade is a listed monument, which limits changes to the entrance and signage.
The Eldorado has hosted the closing ceremony and award presentation of the Dijon International Short Film Festival every year since 1995. The cinema has been classified Art et Essai since 1972, a status granted to venues showing independent and non-mainstream films.
