Collégiale Notre-Dame d'Espérance de Montbrison

The Collégiale Notre-Dame d'Espérance is a Gothic church in Montbrison arranged with a central nave flanked by side aisles and terminating in a pentagonal apse. The interior space follows the typical structure of churches from this architectural period, creating distinct zones for worship and procession.

Construction began in 1223 when Count Guy IV of Forez commissioned this collegiate church to be managed by thirteen canons at a location near the Vizézy river. The building emerged during a period when such institutions served as major religious centers in their regions.

The western entrance features intricate stone carvings that catch the eye and draw visitors to examine its details. This sculptural work creates a striking focal point at the threshold of the church.

Access to this church is available through Notre Dame Cloister Street, and it continues to function as an active place of worship within the Saint Claire Saint Therese en Forez parish. Visitors should remember that this remains a working community space with regular worship activities throughout the week.

Inside the church rests the tomb of Count Guy IV, embellished with carved figures showing him in his official role as nobleman and founder. This burial monument is a rare example of how medieval leaders were honored and remembered through sculptural art.
