Collégiale Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Laurent d'Eu, Gothic collegiate church in Eu, France.
The collégiale Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Laurent d'Eu is a Gothic church standing in the center of the town of Eu in Normandy. It has a tall nave supported by stone pillars, a transept, and a crypt located beneath the choir.
The church was founded in the late 12th century by canons of the order of Saint-Victor. Fires in the 15th century caused major damage, and the rebuilding that followed gave the building much of the form it has today.
The collegiate church is dedicated to two saints: Notre-Dame and Saint-Laurent, the patron of Eu. The stained glass windows along the nave come from different periods and show scenes from the lives of the saints, which visitors can follow as they walk through the building.
The church is easy to reach on foot from the center of Eu, close to the town's castle. A visit to the crypt is possible and worth doing, as it gives a different view of the building's structure from below.
The crypt holds the tomb of Saint Laurence of Dublin, an Irish archbishop who died in Eu in the 12th century. His presence in this small Norman town explains why he became co-patron of the church alongside Notre-Dame.
