Jardin Jungle Karlostachys, Botanical garden in Eu, France

Jardin Jungle Karlostachys is a 15-hectare private park on the Route de Beaumont in Eu, in the forest of Eu. It is divided into an arboretum with rare trees and a bamboo collection, a walled garden of rhododendrons and climbers, a water garden and a eucalyptus heath. Thousands of plant species grow among brambles, dead trees and nettles left in place.

Charles Boulanger began planting the garden in 1990 and created it at Eu in 1994; it opened to the public in 2012. He named it Karlostachys after his own first name, Charles, and Stachys, short for Phyllostachys, the bamboo genus. The garden lies on the Route de Beaumont, between the Ferme de Beaumont and the Gallo-Roman site of Briga in the Eu forest.

The name Karlostachys combines "Karlos", for owner Charles Boulanger, with "Stachys" from Phyllostachys, the bamboo genus. The garden keeps brambles, nettles, ivy and dying trees on purpose, and the hazel dormouse finds cover in the bramble patches. Charles Boulanger leads guided tours by appointment.

The garden lies on the Route de Beaumont in Eu, three kilometres from the town centre, between the Ferme de Beaumont and the Gallo-Roman site of Briga in the Eu forest. It is private and has opened to the public since 2012, with visits by guided tour arranged in advance with owner Charles Boulanger. Paths cross a wild forest setting, so plan for uneven ground and several hours on foot.

The name Karlostachys combines "Karlos", for owner Charles Boulanger, with "Stachys", short for Phyllostachys, the bamboo genus. The bamboo collection holds over 300 species and cultivars, from giants above 13 m to climbing, red, blue, black and striped forms, including Yushania pauciramificans and Borinda 'KR 6791'.
