The pentagonal fortification features five bastions and stands as part of a defensive ring around Paris, controlling the northeastern route into the capital.
Built between 1842 and 1846 under Adolphe Thiers administration, the fort produced toxic gas shells during World War I and later housed nuclear research facilities.
The entrance section of Fort d'Aubervilliers currently serves as quarters for the Mobile Gendarmerie force, maintaining its connection to military functions.
The fort connects to Paris through its metro station on Line 7, with four entrances on Avenue de la Division Leclerc and Avenue Jean Jaurès.
The fort grounds contain radioactive materials from past experiments, with 61 barrels of caesium-137 and radium-226 requiring continuous monitoring and cleanup efforts.
