Fort-les-Bains

Fort-les-Bains is a squared fort with four bastions arranged around a central water tank at its heart. Inside are military barracks, the commander's residence, and a small chapel.

The fort was completed in 1674 as a response to the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659, which required stronger defenses in the Roussillon region. It formed part of France's effort to secure its newly established borders.

The fort showcases French military engineering from the 1600s, with defensive structures that reveal how soldiers built fortifications during that era. The layout reflects how France secured its borders at that time.

The fort remains privately owned with limited public access, so it is best to check conditions before planning a visit. Viewing from outside still gives a clear sense of its fortified structure and layout.

Spanish forces besieged and occupied this fort for roughly one year starting in 1793 during the French Revolution. This dramatic episode shows how border fortifications remained vulnerable to conflict even decades after their construction.
