Fontaine-réservoir Sainte-Marie, Public fountain in Rouen, France
The Sainte-Marie fountain features three sculptural groups representing Agriculture, Livestock, and the City of Rouen, positioned around a semi-circular basin with monumental stairs.
Inaugurated in 1879, this reservoir fountain was designed by architect Édouard Deperthes and sculptor Alexandre Falguière, following a competition that included Bartholdi among participants.
The fountain incorporates allegorical sculptures of children representing the Robec and Aubette rivers, with a central figure symbolizing Rouen sailing on these waterways.
The underground reservoir continues to supply drinking water to Rouen residents, while the fountain remains accessible near the Museum of Antiquities on Louis-Ricard Street.
The limestone structure required multiple restorations due to material quality issues, with the first renovation occurring in 1914 and the most recent in 1983.
