Le Grand Ventron, Mountain summit in Vosges, France
The Grand Ventron reaches an elevation of 1,204 meters and stands between Ventron, Cornimont in Lorraine and Kruth in Alsace regions of France.
The mountain carried different names in the 16th century, including Winterau, Wynterau in 1579, and Winteraw in 1582, derived from German words for winter and meadow.
Before Alsace returned to France in 1920, the north-south ridge of Grand Ventron marked the border between countries, with ancient boundary stones still visible today.
A forest road follows the ridge line from Col de la Vierge to Col d'Oderen, featuring a small inn at Chaume du Grand Ventron and a French Alpine Club shelter.
The mountain peak lacks vegetation and provides clear views of the Route des Cretes, Thur Valley, and Swiss Alps, which emerge from a sea of mist in cold weather.
