Hôtel de Blossac, Classical private mansion in historic center, Rennes, France.
The Hôtel de Blossac is a classical mansion in the historic center of Rennes with two main wings and a grand staircase. The rooms feature marble finishes and contain a salon decorated with gilded details and ornate architectural elements.
The mansion was built in 1728 by the La Bourdonnaye family and served as the residence of the Commanding Officer of Brittany until 1789. Later, the building was divided into apartments, making it accessible to more people.
The building shows how French nobility in the 18th century designed their homes, with balanced proportions and clean lines throughout. The marble and gilded decorations speak of a life lived in comfort and refinement.
Access is limited since a regional cultural administration occupies the building on rue du Chapitre. The public can usually see the interior only during European Heritage Days.
The French novelist Paul Féval was born within these walls in 1816, during a time when the building had already been converted into apartments. The birthplace of a notable author adds a literary connection to the address.
