Hôtel de Vignolles, hôtel particulier au Mans (Sarthe)

Hôtel de Vignolles is a 1549 townhouse on place Saint-Pierre in Le Mans' Vieux-Mans, built for Jean de Vignolles and never finished. Its pale stone facade has a rough dark stone base, quoins of alternating sizes, small-paned windows and two doors, one arched and one rectangular with a glass panel. A horizontal stone band runs above the ground floor.

Jean de Vignolles, a royal counsellor and lieutenant of the sénéchaussée du Maine, bought houses near the counts of Maine's palace in July 1548 for 2,150 livres and had them demolished to build his hôtel from 1549; it was never finished. The city of Le Mans has owned it since 1926, and it was partly classified as a monument historique in 1946. A division into two in 1799 deeply altered its original appearance, and restoration work continues.
