Jardins suspendus, Botanical garden in Le Havre, France.

The Jardins suspendus is a botanical garden perched on a hillside in Le Havre, using old fortification walls as its framework. The site is divided into several garden areas separated by tall stone walls, each housing different plant collections.

The site began as a military fort and was later transformed into a garden space. The old fortification walls were kept in place and now define the structure of the gardens.

The gardens bring together plants from different continents, creating a place where visitors walk through many climates in one location. Inside the greenhouses, tropical species grow side by side in an arrangement that would never occur naturally.

The gardens sit on a hillside, so wear sturdy shoes and allow extra time to explore the different areas. The paths are well paved, but there are some steep sections, especially when climbing from the town below.

From the highest point of the garden, you can look down at the harbor and watch ships moving along the Seine. This connection between the quiet plant world and the busy port activity creates an interesting contrast.
