The Jardin botanique de Tours covers 5 hectares at 33 Boulevard Tonnellé, opposite the Bretonneau hospital. Its northern section has regular parterres along a magnolia avenue and a pool with water lilies and lotus; the south holds an English-style arboretum, a pond and a garden of simples. Greenhouses and an orangery stand on the grounds.

The garden opened in 1843 after a public subscription launched by pharmacist Jean-Anthyme Margueron (1771–1848), making it Tours' oldest public garden. It answered the 1841 founding of the city's Hospice Général and École Préparatoire de Pharmacie, starting with about 2,000 medicinal and exotic plants. Loire floods in 1848 and 1856 put 2 m of water in the greenhouses and forced rebuilding; bombardments damaged the greenhouses in 1944.

The garden's name recalls pharmacist Jean-Anthyme Margueron, who launched the public subscription behind its creation. Since 1945 it has had a dual status: the municipal parks service handles technical direction while the university botany laboratory of the Faculty of Pharmacy coordinates scientific work, an arrangement that earned the "Jardin Botanique de France et des Pays Francophones" label in 2000.

The garden lies at 33, Boulevard Tonnellé, opposite the Bretonneau hospital, west of the city centre. It is open daily and admission is free. The five hectares are divided into four zones: regular parterres and the magnolia avenue to the north, perennials and the plant evolution garden to the east, the English-style arboretum and pond to the south, and the heath, bog, Mediterranean and alpine gardens to the west.

In October 1940, German forces requisitioned tropical plants from the garden's greenhouses to decorate the station at Montoire before the meeting between Pétain and Hitler. The magnolia avenue along the central walk was planted in 1857, renewed in 1882 and again in 1984.
