Mont Rochard, Mountain summit in Mayenne, France
Mont Rochard is a mountain summit in Mayenne that rises to 357 meters and forms the highest point of the Coëvrons massif. The peak sits near the town of Évron and is surrounded by thick forests and pine groves.
The mountain was inhabited in ancient times with a Roman fortress on its slopes that commanded strategic control over the Laval basin. After the French Revolution, the nearby commune of Sainte-Gemmes-le-Robert renamed itself after this significant peak.
The mountain takes its name from an ancient Roman settlement that once shaped the identity of the surrounding region.
The mountain is accessible via several marked hiking trails that wind through the forests with varying difficulty levels. The D20 road between La Glatterie and Villiers provides the main access, with various trailheads available from different points along this route.
Since the 1970s, a broadcasting station for radio and television has occupied the summit and serves as the main transmission point for the entire Mayenne department. Many visitors are surprised to discover this modern facility on the mountaintop.
