Musée de la Mine de Blanzy, Mining museum in Blanzy, France
The Musée de la Mine de Blanzy is a mining museum located on a former mining site in Burgundy. The property includes an extended underground gallery with preserved machinery and recreated work areas that show how mining operations functioned.
Mining operations began here in the 16th century and later made this the major mining basin of Burgundy. Underground work stopped in 1992, though surface activities continued until 2000.
The name comes from the coal mining that shaped daily life here for centuries. You can see throughout the site how miners lived and worked, with tools and objects that tell the story of their demanding labor.
The site is open for visits from March through November, with guided tours available year-round by appointment for groups. Underground areas maintain steady temperatures, so comfortable shoes and a light jacket are practical choices for exploring.
The distinctive Saint-Claude mining headframe dates to the 19th century and was relocated to the museum grounds in 1981. This striking steel structure later gained recognition as a historical monument and remains one of the most visible features on the property.
