Malouinière de la Ville Bague, Private historic mansion in Saint-Coulomb, France.

Malouinière de la Ville Bague is a private historic residence in Saint-Coulomb featuring a chapel, dovecote, an 18th-century water basin, and a four-hectare park enclosed by stone walls. The compound sits on elevated grounds with multiple rooms containing original architectural features and period details.

Guillaume Eon commissioned this residence in 1710 with architect Garangeau, who collaborated with military engineer Vauban on the design. The house was built during the peak prosperity of Saint-Malo's shipping families.

The interior displays collections of maritime equipment, period furnishings, and 19th-century wallpaper now recognized as a historic monument. These pieces show how wealthy shipping families lived and decorated their country retreats.

The residence is open for guided visits from April through September with set times for tours. It is best to check beforehand which days and times are available, as not all weekdays have scheduled visits.

The property retains its original character as a country retreat for a wealthy shipping family and showcases architectural styles typical of Saint-Malo shipowners from the 1700s. Its elevated location and surrounding woodland reveal how the merchant elite chose to live away from the bustling ports.

Saint-Malo: sandy beaches, stone walls, coast paths

Saint-Malo is a seaside town where stone is everywhere. Strong city walls surround the old part. Gray granite streets lead down to the harbor. Sand beaches stretch along the walls. Walking on the walls, you see the bay and islands on the horizon. Fort National sits on its island, reachable at low tide, and Sillon beach offers a direct view of the sea from the town center. The Solidor tower and old gates like Porte Saint-Vincent remind us of the port’s long history. The photos show places that link the town to the sea. You can see beaches like Éventail, Bon-Secours, and La Hoguette, each with its own feel. The 12th-century walls are good for walking because they always give a view of the water. Parks like Jardin des Douves and the village of Aleth show how nature and history live side by side here. Even Rue du Jerzual in Dinan, outside Saint-Malo, shows old crafts and houses built into the hills.
