The museum displays 15,000 works spanning from archaeological remains to 20th century art, with strong collections of Flemish baroque and French paintings.
Founded in 1801 through the Académie valenciennoise de peinture et de sculpture, the museum moved to its current building designed by Paul Dusart in 1909.
The collection features major works by Peter Paul Rubens, Antony van Dyck, and local artist Antoine Watteau, representing the artistic heritage of Northern France.
The museum is temporarily closed for renovations, but continues to organize workshops and events to maintain engagement with visitors during this period.
The museum received more than 140,000 visitors in 2007, marking its highest attendance record in the early 21st century.
