Musée Miniature et Cinéma, Cinema and miniature museum in Vieux Lyon, France
The Musée Miniature et Cinéma is a museum set inside a Renaissance building in the heart of Lyon's old town, the Vieux-Lyon, in the 5th arrondissement. It displays, across several floors, a collection of film props from well-known productions alongside handcrafted miniature scenes built at a very small scale.
The museum was founded in 2005 by Dan Ohlmann, a miniature artist who initially displayed his own work in a smaller setting. Over time, the collection grew to include original props from the film world, giving the place its current double focus.
Many of the film props on display come from well-known productions, and visitors can stand right next to objects that looked enormous on screen but are actually very small. This contrast between what you see in the cinema and what you observe here with your own eyes makes the visit memorable.
The museum sits on Rue Saint-Jean, one of the main streets of the Vieux-Lyon, and is easy to reach on foot from the Vieux-Lyon metro station. The building covers several floors, so comfortable shoes and enough time are both a good idea.
Some of the miniature scenes on display are made up of thousands of individual elements that are barely visible to the naked eye, to the point that some visitors use a magnifying glass to take it all in. The surprise of discovering how much work can fit into such a small space tends to be one of the moments visitors remember most.
