Octogone de Montmorillon, Romanesque chapel in Montmorillon, France
The Octogone de Montmorillon is a Romanesque chapel built in an eight-sided shape with regular 45-degree angles forming its walls. Its exterior displays detailed stone carvings and sculptural details throughout the stonework.
The chapel formed part of a larger religious complex established around 1080-1085. It gained official protected monument status in France in 1840.
The carved stone surfaces inside display many figures including animals and human forms, along with scenes from religious texts. These detailed works show the skill of medieval craftsmen who created them.
The building sits on Rue des Augustins and underwent major restoration work between 1997 and 1999. These repairs focused on preserving and restoring its original architectural features.
The eight-sided design draws inspiration from the Temple Mount in Jerusalem and uses the number eight, which represents resurrection in religious symbolism. This geometric form gives the building a special spiritual meaning.
