The Oppidum de Murcens occupies a strategic position atop limestone cliffs overlooking the Vers River in the Lot department of southern France.
The archaeological site dates back to the 1st century BCE and served as a fortified Gallic settlement until its population relocated to Cahors during Roman invasions.
The fortification system at Murcens represents the southernmost example of murus gallicus construction, demonstrating advanced Gallic military architecture.
Archaeological excavations and research projects continue at the site, with guided visits available through the local heritage office in Cras.
Initial archaeological investigations of the site in 1867 by Edouard Castagné marked the first documented study of a Gallic fortification in this region.
