Baou de Saint-Marcel

The oppidum stands on a plateau at 167 meters altitude, featuring steep cliffs to the west and defensive walls on other sides.

Founded in the early 6th century BC and inhabited until the late 2nd century BC, this Celtic-Ligurian settlement controlled the Huveaune valley.

Archaeological excavations since 1930 have revealed numerous Mediterranean ceramics and local artifacts, documenting regional trade patterns.

The archaeological site opens to visitors during European Heritage Days, with guided tours explaining the ancient ruins and 19th-century structures.

The defensive walls incorporate travertine limestone slabs and include an ovoid tower, demonstrating indigenous construction techniques.
