Opéra national de Lorraine, Opera house in Place Stanislas, Nancy, France.

The Opéra national de Lorraine is an opera house in the heart of Nancy, facing the Place Stanislas, with a Neoclassical facade of symmetrical columns and decorative stonework. The building has multiple seating levels inside and can be entered from both the main square and a side street.

A first theatre on this site opened in 1758 as part of the urban project built around the Place Stanislas. After a fire destroyed it in 1905, a new building was constructed and opened in 1919.

The opera house sits at the edge of the Place Stanislas, one of the most celebrated squares in France, and locals pass by it as part of their daily routine. Attending a performance here feels connected to the city's everyday life rather than separate from it.

The building is right on the Place Stanislas and easy to reach on foot from most of the city center. A visit pairs well with a walk around the surrounding square, which is worth seeing on its own.

Although the current building was constructed after 1905, its facade mixes Neoclassical and Art Nouveau details, which is unusual for an opera house of this type. Nancy was at the time one of the main centers of Art Nouveau in Europe, which explains why that influence appears even on such a formal building.
