Phare de l'Anse à la Barque, Lighthouse in Vieux-Habitants, Guadeloupe.
The Anse à la Barque lighthouse is a white cylindrical tower located on the western coast of Basse-Terre, surrounded by coconut palms and shoreline. The structure guides ships at sea and remains clearly visible from the water.
The current structure was erected in 1931 to replace older lights that no longer met navigational needs. Later automation removed the need for a resident keeper on site.
The name references the cove that has long served fishing communities and seafarers as a natural gathering point. The tower functions as a familiar landmark that shapes how locals navigate and relate to this stretch of coast.
The lighthouse is visible from the nearby beach and observation points along the shore. Best visibility occurs in clear weather when the sea is calm.
Beneath the seafloor around this location rest the remains of two Napoleonic-era ships that sank in these waters. Their wrecks connect the lighthouse to the region's maritime warfare history.
