Ouvrage Bersillies, Military fortification in Bersillies, France.
Ouvrage Bersillies is a military fortification composed of two combat blocks linked by an underground corridor. This corridor houses service areas, barracks, and support facilities for the stationed personnel.
This fortification was constructed between 1934 and 1938 as part of the Maginot Line, replacing an earlier defense structure from the Séré de Rivières system. It was surrendered on May 23, 1940, when German forces gained control of the terrain directly above it.
The interior walls display murals painted by garrison members during the late 1930s, showing how soldiers personalized their underground daily life. These artworks provide glimpses into the lives of those stationed deep within the fortification.
This structure is currently owned by a hunting association and is not open to the public. Visitors can view the exterior from the surrounding area, but interior access is not permitted.
The complex was designed to house approximately 100 soldiers in its compact underground spaces. The cramped quarters offer insight into the challenging living conditions experienced by those assigned to such frontier defenses.
