Ouvrage Rohrbach

Ouvrage Rohrbach is an underground military complex in Bettviller featuring multiple infantry blocks, gun casemates, and shelters built into a slope above the Saar valley. The structures extend beneath the surface and link artillery batteries, machine gun positions, and supply areas through an interconnected tunnel network.

Built between 1929 and 1938 as part of the Maginot Line, this fortification served as one of France's forward defensive positions against Germany. In June 1940, the position fell after intense fighting, with its 176-strong garrison surrendering to German forces.

The name comes from the nearby village of Rohrbach and reflects how France sought to protect its border through engineering and fortification. Visitors can observe how the bunkers and gun positions were integrated into the local landscape as part of this defensive strategy.
