Ouvrage Welschhof, Military fortification in Gros-Réderching, France
Ouvrage Welschhof is an underground military fortification in Gros-Réderching with three combat blocks connected by galleries containing machine gun positions and observation equipment. The installation houses ammunition storage, command centers, kitchens, medical facilities, and power generators situated approximately 30 meters below ground level.
Construction of this installation took place from 1934 to 1938 as part of the Maginot Line defensive system along the French border. German forces captured it in 1940 following heavy artillery attacks, making it a pivotal point in the campaign.
The structure reflects 1930s French military engineering through its underground layout and how different spaces worked together for soldiers' daily life. The way command centers, kitchens, and sleeping areas connect reveals how military operations and routines were organized below ground.
