Ouvrage Haut-Poirier, Military fortress in Achen, France
The Haut-Poirier fortification includes three combat blocks and one entrance block, connected through underground galleries at 30 meters depth.
Built between 1934 and 1938 as part of the Maginot Line, the fortress surrendered to German forces in June 1940 after seven hours of bombardment.
The fortification represents French military engineering of the 1930s, with its system of combat blocks, barracks, ammunition storage, and utility services.
The exterior of the fortress remains accessible year-round, while interior visits require special permission from the AMEPA administration organization.
The fortress features a retractable turret for dual weapons and a 300-millimeter thick armored observation bell weighing 31 tons.
