Ouvrage de Thiaumont

Ouvrage de Thiaumont is a fortification on the ridge between the Meuse and Douaumont with reinforced concrete structures, defensive ditches, and observation posts. The site features several underground chambers, gun positions, and ammunition storage areas carved into the rock.

The fortification was built between 1887 and 1888 and served as a key position during the Battle of Verdun in 1916. It endured intensive German artillery bombardment but the structure held against the assaults.

The fortification shows how French soldiers lived and worked during the First World War, with underground spaces built to protect them from artillery fire. The site reflects the determination of those who defended it under extreme conditions.

Visitors can explore the surviving structures including underground rooms and gun positions, often with guides explaining the military functions. The terrain is uneven and passages can be tight, so comfortable shoes and patience are important.
