Parc des Promenades, Urban park in central Alençon, France
Parc des Promenades is a four-hectare park behind the Town Hall with ancient trees, rose gardens, aviaries, and rockeries scattered throughout. A music kiosk and a gazebo-topped terrace provide focal points for wandering through the grounds.
The park was founded in 1783 as Alençon's first public green space on land that once belonged to the Dukes of Alençon as hunting grounds for deer. This shift from private land to public use marked a turning point for the city.
The music kiosk from 1888 with its octagonal stone foundation serves as the gathering point for community events and outdoor performances. This structure reflects how the space has long brought people together for shared experiences.
The park is accessible from entrances on Rue Balzac, Rue Candie, and Rue Albert 1er and remains open from early morning until late evening. The flat layout makes it easy for visitors of all abilities to explore the grounds at their own pace.
During summer months the park becomes an entertainment hub hosting the Alençon Plage festival, outdoor cinema, and sports activities. This seasonal transformation brings a different energy to the grounds that visitors may not expect from a traditional park.
