Pont Gallieni, Transportation bridge in central Lyon, France
Pont Gallieni is a combined tram and road bridge that crosses the Rhone River in Lyon. It carries tram lines T1 and T2 alongside cars, linking the Perrache district to the 7th arrondissement.
The original bridge opened in 1848 as a suspension structure called Pont du Midi. The modern steel version dates from 1965 and took its current name in 1916 to honor General Joseph Gallieni.
The bridge integrates both road and rail transport systems, reflecting Lyon's commitment to diverse transportation methods within its urban landscape.
Sidewalks run along both sides of the bridge for pedestrians to cross safely. Traffic can be heavy during peak hours, so plan your walk accordingly if you want a quieter crossing.
The current 204.80-meter steel structure, completed in 1965, features seven steel girders resting on tapered stone piers typical of Lyon's architecture.
