Textile Arts Museum, Textile museum in 2nd arrondissement, France

The Textile Arts Museum is housed in the hôtel de Villeroy at 34 rue de la Charité, a mansion built by Bertaud de la Vaure in 1729, and in the adjoining hôtel de Lacroix-Laval, built by Jacques-Germain Soufflot in 1739. Its arched stone doorway carries gold lettering reading "MVSÉES DES TISSVS ET DES ARTS DECORATIFS" above black double doors. The textile collection holds more than 2.5 million pieces, from Egyptian fabrics of around 2500 BC to the 21st century.

The idea dates to 1797, when deputy Étienne Mayeuvre proposed a textile museum with a drawing school to aid Lyon's silk industry. The Chamber of Commerce decided to found an art and industry museum in 1856, and it opened on 6 March 1864 in the Palais de la Bourse. Specialised as the Musée Historique des Tissus in 1891, it moved into the hôtel de Villeroy in 1946; the region took over both museums for one euro in January 2019.

The museum's name changed in 2018: founded in 1864 as the Musée d'Art et d'Industrie, it became the Musée des Tissus in 2019 after the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region took it over for one euro. The door at 34 rue de la Charité still reads "Musées des Tissus et des Arts décoratifs". The CIETA, an international centre for the study of ancient textiles, is based here.

The museum stands at 34 rue de la Charité in Lyon's 2nd arrondissement, sharing the address with the Musée des Arts décoratifs; one ticket covers both. It is currently closed to the public for renovation led by architect Rudy Ricciotti, so check reopening before planning a visit. The CIETA textile research centre and documentation library remain attached to the institution.

The museum's name survives on its door: the arched panel at 34 rue de la Charité reads "MVSÉES DES TISSVS ET DES ARTS DECORATIFS", using V for U in the Latin manner. The institution dropped "et des Arts décoratifs" from its title in 2018, so the lettering records an earlier name.
