Plan de Phazy, Thermal spring in Hautes-Alpes, France
Plan de Phazy is a thermal spring in the Hautes-Alpes that flows year-round at temperatures between 26 and 28 degrees Celsius (79-82 degrees Fahrenheit). The water rises from approximately 1000 meters (3280 feet) below and carries dissolved minerals collected along its underground journey.
Roman engineers recognized the spring's value and developed the first bathing structures here during the second century BCE along a major trade route. The distinctive rotunda building visible today dates to the early 1800s and represents a later phase of thermal development at the site.
The historic rotunda serves as a display space where local craftspeople and artists present their work throughout the year. Visitors come to discover regional goods and support traditional makers within this cultural setting.
Four outdoor pools filled with warm mineral water are accessible throughout the year and can be reached conveniently from the N94 road connecting Gap and Briançon. The location remains open during all seasons without significant access difficulties.
The water displays a distinctive reddish color caused by high concentrations of iron oxide, making it visibly different from typical thermal springs. This coloration comes from a complex mix of minerals including silicon, calcium, magnesium, chlorides and sulfates dissolved from the surrounding rock layers.
