Pont de Varades, Suspension bridge in Loireauxence, France
The Pont de Varades is a suspension bridge made of reinforced concrete and steel spanning the Loire River with a total length of 309 meters. Its central span measures 178 meters and is supported by sturdy structural elements that carry two traffic lanes and two sidewalks.
An earlier suspension bridge was built in 1852 by the Escarraguel brothers at this location. The current structure dates to 1954 and was constructed as part of France's post-war infrastructure rebuilding program.
The bridge links two communities on opposite riverbanks and is woven into the daily life of local residents. For people in the region, it serves as a vital connection that structures their everyday movements and activities.
The bridge welcomes both pedestrians and vehicle traffic with dedicated sidewalks on both sides for people on foot. Traffic flows regularly throughout the day, so expect busier conditions during peak hours.
In 2020, twelve additional support pillars were installed directly in the riverbed to reinforce the bridge's structural integrity. At the same time, the suspension cables were adjusted to provide temporary structural stability during these reinforcement works.
