Prieuré of Orsan

The Prieuré of Orsan is a former monastery with gardens spread across substantial grounds in the Maisonnais region. The property divides into different sections with raised beds, fruit shrubs, wooden trellises, and pathways running between the plantings.

This monastic community was established in the 11th century and belonged to a network of religious houses under a larger abbey's oversight. Over the centuries, it experienced periods of disruption, and eventually the buildings fell into ruin.

The gardens reflect spiritual practices visitors can experience today through distinct areas designed for prayer and reflection. Walking through, one notices how monastic life was organized between spaces for food, healing, and meditation.

The gardens today grew from a restoration effort that started in the 1990s, transforming neglected ruins into planted spaces. What stands out is that nearly all structures come from the property itself—wooden trellises, gates, and bed borders were built from materials found on the site.
