Prefecture hotel of Landes, Neoclassical administrative building in Mont-de-Marsan, France.
The Prefecture Hotel of Landes is a neoclassical administrative building at Place du General de Gaulle in Mont-de-Marsan, featuring symmetrical facades, columns, and tall windows. The structure follows the principles of neoclassical design with balanced proportions and refined architectural details throughout.
The building was designed in 1845 by architect David-Francois Panay and originally served as the town hall. In 1946, it transitioned to become the regional administrative center for Landes department.
The building embodies classical French administrative design through its grand entrance halls and formal reception spaces. These rooms shape the character of the square today and show how administrative centers were meant to project authority.
The building is prominently located in the city center and easily visible from the surrounding square. Visitors can view the exterior and architectural features freely from the plaza, though interior access may be restricted during working hours.
The roof retains original bell mountings that give the structure a historical distinction. The coat of arms of Mont-de-Marsan is carved directly into the stone facade, reflecting the local identity embedded in the building itself.
