Roc de Peyre

Roc de Peyre is a volcanic peak rising from the landscape in Lozère with its dark basalt formation. The summit creates a pointed outcrop that stands alone, with metal railings installed at the top to protect visitors.

A fortress once stood at this peak until the 15th century when military forces destroyed it. This destruction ended a long period when the stronghold remained unbreached by attackers.

The summit serves as a landmark that helps people navigate and understand the surrounding landscape. The orientation table here lets visitors connect the names and features they see to the broader geography of the region.

A parking area and marked trail lead visitors to the summit for a short walk to the top. Sturdy shoes are helpful since the path can be uneven and rocky near the peak.

This peak formed during a different geological period and remained separate from the nearby Aubrac volcanic system. Its independent origin makes it a distinct geological formation worth noticing.
