Square de la Roquette, Urban park in 11th arrondissement, France.
Square de la Roquette is an urban park in the 11th arrondissement of Paris, made up of several areas with lawns, trees, and planted beds. Paths run through the grounds connecting the different sections, and the space opens onto the surrounding streets through more than one entrance.
This land was once the site of La Petite Roquette prison, which was torn down in 1975. Two of the original guard houses at the entrance were kept standing and remain the most visible sign of what the place used to be.
The name of this park refers to wild rocket, a plant that once grew between the stones of the former convent on this site. In the quieter corners of the grounds, visitors can still notice traces of that past in the way the space is arranged.
The park sits within easy walking distance of several Metro stations on lines 2, 3, and 9. Several entrances let visitors approach from different streets, which makes it straightforward to fit a visit into a walk through the neighborhood.
The grounds are divided into six separate areas, some of which were designed with children and teenagers in mind. Near the main entrance, a petanque court gives visitors the chance to watch or join a game of this French pastime.
