The 11th arrondissement is a residential district in Paris stretching between Place de la République and Place de la Nation, marked by small streets, 19th-century apartment buildings, and newer constructions. The area covers numerous shops, markets, and green spaces spread across several neighborhoods.
The district formed in 1860 by merging several villages and suburban zones that lay outside the city until then. The layout of new boulevards and residential buildings transformed the former craftsmen and working area during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Streets in the eastern part lead to small workshops and craft businesses that still produce furniture and decorative items. Cafés along Rue Oberkampf draw a mixed crowd of residents and visitors in the evening, gathering over a glass of wine.
Numerous metro stations connect the district to other parts of the city, keeping walking distances between stations short. Main streets offer many shops and cafés, while quieter side streets work well for walks.
The Marché d'Aligre has combined a flea market with a covered food market for over a century, open daily except Mondays. The area also hosts several small concert venues where live music of different styles plays regularly.
