Trois-Épis, Pilgrimage site and health resort in Alsace, France
Trois-Épis is a pilgrimage destination and certified health resort in the Vosges at about 600 meters elevation. From here, you look out over the Rhine Valley toward the Black Forest, with several hiking routes available, including one leading to the Christ statue on Mount Galtz.
The site gained religious significance in 1491 when a blacksmith reported seeing the Virgin Mary with three ears of wheat at this location. This vision established the pilgrimage tradition that continues today.
The modern pilgrimage church built in 1968 stands out with its concrete three-leaf clover shape, breaking away from typical church architecture. Visitors immediately notice this distinctive form, which makes the place feel contemporary and welcoming.
The paths are well-maintained and moderately steep, particularly the climb to the Christ statue, which takes about one hour. It helps to wear proper walking shoes and allow time for breaks when navigating the hilly terrain.
The name comes directly from the 1491 wheat vision and literally means "Three Ears," linking the place name to its founding legend. This linguistic connection to the apparition story remains embedded in the location's identity.
