Bellegarde-sur-Valserine Viaduct, Railway viaduct in Bellegarde-sur-Valserine, France
The Bellegarde-sur-Valserine Viaduct is a railway bridge made of concrete and steel that spans 1055 meters across the landscape. It connects the communities of Éloise and Valserhône while crossing through a valley system between steep terrain.
The viaduct opened in 1982 as a major step forward in connecting the mountainous region by rail. It replaced older and slower transportation methods that had served the communities for decades.
Engineers and architecture students regularly visit the viaduct to study its structural elements and integration with the surrounding mountain landscape.
The best views of this bridge can be found from nearby roads and walking paths that surround the structure. Since it remains an active railway line, direct access to the viaduct itself is not permitted for visitors.
The structure crosses multiple administrative boundaries while linking communities that would otherwise be isolated from each other. When built, it was one of the longest railway viaducts constructed in the French Alpine region.
