Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Chaource, Gothic church in Chaource, France

Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste is a church built in the Gothic style with three naves separated by columns and pierced by large windows that flood the interior with light. The structure features solid stone walls decorated with carved details, while side chapels extend beyond the main body.

Construction started in the late 1100s with the choir, while the nave and side chapels were not completed until 1531 through 1548. This extended building period shows how the structure was gradually expanded over 400 years to meet the needs of the community.

The church displays Gothic craftsmanship through detailed stone carvings that reflect skills passed down by local artisans over centuries. The layout of the interior, with its wide aisles and central space, shows how it was designed for community processions and gatherings.

Access is straightforward on most days, though opening times vary with the seasons, so it helps to check ahead before visiting. The interior is easy to walk through, and you can view the decoration and furnishings up close if you take your time.

An organ built in 1698 by Louis Le Bé sits inside with 25 stops and a wooden case carved with twisted columns that show the craftsmanship of that era. This instrument has remained in working order for over 300 years, an unusual achievement for such a delicate piece.
