Church of Saint Peter, Catholic church in Collonges-la-Rouge, Corrèze, France

The Church of Saint Peter in Collonges-la-Rouge is built of red sandstone, with a 12th-century Romanesque bell tower whose square base rises through an octagonal section to a dark grey conical roof. A second, shorter tower stands on the left. The interior has a plain Romanesque nave and a Gothic left nave lit by stained glass.

Built in red sandstone at the end of the 11th and 12th centuries, the church was enlarged in the late Middle Ages, fortified at the end of the 14th century with a second, shorter nave and a second bell tower, and given four chapels of unequal size in the 15th and 16th centuries. The square south tower, called the watchtower, was added during the Wars of Religion. Classified as a monument historique on 4 April 1905 after the municipality began conservation efforts in 1902, it was restored in 1923 and 1984.

Local tradition holds that during the Wars of Religion Catholics worshipped in the current nave while Protestants used the Chapel of Saint James, each side trying to disrupt the other's service. The church keeps a wooden Christ lying in a hedge until it was found in 1971, now listed as a monument historique.

The church stands in the heart of Collonges-la-Rouge, its Romanesque bell tower visible above the village roofs. The main portal with its Nazareth limestone tympan faces the square; the fortified square watchtower rises on the south side. The interior is entered from the village lane, and the two naves and four chapels make a circuit through uneven levels.

The limestone tympanum over the portal contrasts with the red sandstone of the rest of the church. Tradition holds that during the Wars of Religion, villagers loyal to the Catholic faith took it down and sealed it ten metres up behind a wall facing to protect it from Huguenot vandalism; it was put back in place in 1923 during restoration.
