Augustodurum, Roman archaeological site in Bayeux, France.

Augustodurum is an archaeological site in Bayeux with remains from Roman times, including bath complexes with marble floors and structures from the second century. The excavations have also revealed the original city layout with its different layers of construction.

The settlement started as a tribal center of the Baiocasses and later became a Roman administrative hub. In the third century the city received fortifications to protect against invaders.

The excavations reveal pottery and coins showing how local and Roman traditions mixed together in daily life. You can see this blend in the artifacts found at the site today.

You can follow the original Roman city layout through the current streets of Bayeux, especially along Saint-Jean and Saint-Martin roads, which follow the old Roman pathways. Taking a walk through these areas will help you understand the ancient city.

The remains show how Roman fortification elements from the third century were later built into medieval structures. This layering makes it possible to see different periods in a single structure.
