Château Moncade

Château Moncade is a pentagonal fortress built on a hilltop rising above Orthez, featuring thick stone walls, multiple archways, and a central keep with several levels. The structure displays typical medieval military architecture with strong defensive features positioned at corners and along the walls.

The fortress was built between the 13th and 14th centuries under Gaston VII Moncade's rule. Over time it served military purposes and housed nobility, gradually losing its importance as a residence after the early 1600s.

The castle represents the power and influence of the Moncade family in the region for centuries. Visitors today can sense how this fortress once dominated the landscape and controlled the valley below.

The site sits on a hillside with steep approaches, so visitors should wear good walking shoes and plan time for the climb. Parking is limited on site, and access to certain areas may vary depending on weather conditions.
