Grand Bassin

Grand Bassin is a large water basin along the Canal du Midi in Castelnaudary that serves as a major stopping point for boats traveling through the waterway. The water is bordered by walking paths, and from several viewpoints you can take in the full scale of the basin.

The basin was officially opened on May 19, 1681, marking the start of operations for the Canal du Midi as a continuous waterway. An island was later added to improve the basin's function and protect boats during rough conditions.
